This is a Twine game for my GSD 511 class. You’re playing as a broken robot who wakes up in a junkyard, and needs to try and restore their functionality. Unfortunately, I’ve been quite sick for the last several days so I’ve uploaded what I have currently and will finish writing it when I’m more recovered.

Story Outline

Title of your story: Scrapped

Setting: In Earth’s near-future; in a junkyard-town most residents are scavengers / repair-workers who use what they can find to get by.

Main character: An incomplete robot, can move and speak but not much else.

Goal: The player wants to recover enough of their missing parts to be “complete,” but cannot obtain all parts in the game so they must be intentional with what they consider complete (both parts-wise and also in terms of their relationships with the other characters they meet).

Conflict: Each missing part is currently being used by another character in the area, each with their own reason for needing it. The player must be intentional with the parts that they choose to acquire (either by negotiation, helping, etc) since timeframes may lapse.

Major events: What happens throughout the story?

  • Player boots up and realizes that they are missing core functionality, but can’t remember what exactly they were built for
  • Player comes across The Heap and decides between helping 2 NPCs that will give different parts
  • Player comes across a Workshop and decides between helping 2 NPCs that will give different parts
  • Player comes across The Town and decides between helping 2 NPCs that will give different parts
  • After collecting a part from each location, an ending will be unlocked

Choices: What important decisions can the player make?

  • The Heap: acquire the memory chip OR the upgraded processor
  • Workshop: acquire the multi-tool OR the new battery
  • The Town: acquire the tank treads OR levitation device

Ending(s):

  • Yep, You’re a Robot - functioning, but no connections / low empathy with other characters
  • The Power of Friendship - doesn’t function well, but makes meaningful relationships with other characters that fill in the gaps
  • I’m Going Back to Sleep - not collecting any of the parts
  • What I’m Made For - collect a specific set of parts: what the player robot had before they booted up and realized they were incomplete
    • Hint: Can be found after retrieving the memory chip
    • Answer: memory chip, tank treads, multi-tool

Characters

  • Cyborg man - in the workshop, has the multitool attachment
  • Motorcycle woman - in the workshop, has the new battery
  • Trench coat - in the town, has the levitation engine
  • Another robot - in the town, has the tank treads
  • Cockroach - in the heap, has the upgraded processor
  • Sentient pile of garbage - in the heap, has the memory chip
